Danielle Harris - new Executive Director of Reading Corps and Math Corps in Mississippi and Georgia.

A Q&A with the New Exec. Director of Georgia and Mississippi Programs, Danielle Harris

We are thrilled to welcome Danielle Harris as our new Executive Director of Georgia and Mississippi Programs! Harris has a stellar track record of success in the nonprofit sector, with two decades of experience in youth program development, community engagement, and organizational growth.

She comes to Ampact from Communities in Schools, a nonprofit dedicated to helping at-risk students stay in school, and Boys & Girls Club of America before that. A long-time resident of Atlanta, Harris holds multiple degrees from Clark Atlanta University.

But that’s just who Harris is on paper. To get to know our newest leader, we spoke with Harris about her career and her hopes for making a difference for students across Georgia and Mississippi. Below you’ll find our full interview.

How did you end up in the education field?

My career began with the Department of Education after I graduated college, driven by a deep commitment to providing tools and resources for often-overlooked populations. During my time as a summer intern Supplemental Instructor for federal TRIO Programs, I worked closely with first-generation college students, helping them navigate the complexities of higher education.

The impact of this work earned me a full-time position, where I supported recent high school graduates along their path to college or career paths. This role allowed me to empower youth with resources and guidance to excel in rigorous college courses and beyond. My transformative experience with TRIO programs laid the foundation for my now 20+ year career in education.

What are you most excited about in your new role as Executive Director of Georgia and Mississippi Programs?

I’m excited to immerse myself in the programs across both Georgia and Mississippi, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their structures and impact. My goal is to streamline execution where needed, optimize efficiencies, and develop strong leaders within the programs to ensure long-term sustainability.

I’m energized by the opportunity to amplify the work being done and foster meaningful connections that will enhance outcomes for the communities we serve.

What hopes or goals do you have for the coming years?

Looking ahead, my vision includes finding new ways to use national service to support young people. I also hope to create an Ampact Alumni network, fostering a community of past participants who can inspire and mentor others.

Building on the success of Reading Corps and Math Corps, I aim to explore new partnerships and innovative strategies to deepen the programs’ impact, ensuring that more students in Georgia and Mississippi achieve their full potential.

What’s an experience from your career that helped shape you?

My career has been shaped by the genuine connections I’ve built with people from all walks of life. I’ve gained invaluable wisdom from seasoned mentors who generously shared their life and leadership experiences.

A profound influence has been my father, a successful business owner who instilled in me the importance of values, discipline, and resilience. His teachings have been a guiding force in my life, continuously challenging and empowering me to grow as a leader and strive for excellence in everything I do.

Last year Reading Corps and Math Corps supported more than 7,000 students in Georgia and Mississippi. With Harris at the helm, we hope to reach even more in the years to come! Want to get involved?
