“I love doing the interventions because you can see progress pretty fast. The kids I’m working with are at all different levels so it’s interesting and really rewarding to watch all of them grow. We get to have fun and learn together which is the best.”

Education Background: I went to Luther College in Iowa for a little bit and left six months in which was in 2019, and a month later the pandemic started. I was forced into this I’m not in school anymore but love being around kids position and that’s when I heard about Reading Corps and that they are always hiring. I started the application process and eventually found out I was accepted and was so excited to have a job.

History with Reading Corps (or other AmeriCorps service): This is my first year serving with Reading Corps!

Why I serve with Reading Corps: I’m having all this great field experience so if I ever want to go back to college it looks really good on an application or resume. For me, it was exactly what I needed. I wasn’t ready for college and I jumped in too soon. Reading Corps helped to re-center me and show me more what I want to do in the future. I would love to go back to school and do part time with Reading Corps. Reading Corps has given me the push I needed to get my degree and take this further. I would love to get my degree in early childhood education.

Making a Difference: The kids are amazing. I love the way they see the world. Especially this year with COVID and everything going on I thought they’d be scared but they just continue to have fun. It has almost been an escape from all of the madness. I come to work and get to help these little kiddos work on their skills. The staff here is so wonderful. I came in a week early to help and right away the teachers welcomed me with open arms and were just so sweet to me. It’s helped me even build relationships with the kids because the teachers know them already. It’s so fun to laugh and have fun with them.

Student Success Story: I love doing the interventions because you can see progress pretty fast. The kids I’m working with are at all different levels so it’s interesting and really rewarding to watch all of them grow. We get to have fun and learn together which is the best.
