Mother-daughter duo is Committed to Helping Students Succeed

Mother-daughter duo, Cathy and Amy are Reading Corps tutors in Duluth Public School District. Cathy is a retired preschool teacher who loves working with kids and wasn’t ready to step away from working in a school. She knew about Reading Corps from her time teaching and loved the idea of being able to serve part-time while continuing to help students learn.

Amy on the other hand, was working in the corporate world, ready for a change when her mom suggested she give tutoring a try. She was immediately interested in the idea of it and was willing to take the risk. “It was a completely different lifestyle change,” Amy says, “The opportunity to be helpful to both students and teachers while making an incredible impact is life-changing.”

Although serving at different schools, both Cathy and Amy agree that tutoring with Reading Corps brings them so much joy. “My kids never thought I worked because I loved it so much,” said Cathy “When you really enjoy something, life is so much more satisfying.” Amy also said she is so much happier now, and just loves watching how quickly the kids learn.

As a second-year tutor, Amy plans to carry out her four years of service and then go back to school to become a social worker in an elementary school! Cathy also hopes to come back for her final year and to continue helping set students up for success.

If you or someone you know is looking for an opportunity to make a difference, we encourage to you learn more! Applications for the 23-24 school year will open in February 2023.
