AmeriCorps in Action

New Ventures and Greater Reach in Wisconsin

Celebrating Wisconsin’s Incredible 2023-24 School Year

This has been a landmark year for our education programs across the country: reaching more students and making a larger impact than ever before. We want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible success of our programs in Wisconsin! As one of the first states to replicate Reading Corps, our partners in Wisconsin have an amazing track record of helping students. And 2023-24 was a banner year!

Thanks to the dedication of partners in more than a dozen different districts, Wisconsin launched a pilot program for Math Corps in the state, training their first AmeriCorps members to help students build foundational math skills. On top of this new venture, Reading Corps also had their biggest year ever in the state by the number of students served and total time spent supporting those students. We are so grateful to celebrate and share in the success of our Wisconsin members, staff, and partners!

Piloting Math Corps

The 2023-24 school year saw the beginning of an exciting new service opportunity in eight Milwaukee schools: Math Corps! As with any pilot, the program is starting small, with an initial cohort of nine Math Tutors. However, the first-year results have been very promising. Those nine AmeriCorps members supported more than 250 students across the city, showing that even a small group of tutors can have a big reach.

“We’ve seen the tremendous impact that Reading Corps has had on the students of Wisconsin. We couldn’t be more excited at the opportunity to help our students build fundamental math skills and give them a better chance at success in the classroom and beyond,” says Itzel Galindo, Executive Director of Wisconsin Programs.

Continuing Reading Corps’ Growth

On top of launching Math Corps in Wisconsin, Reading Corps continued to deliver big results. In Milwaukee – the city where Reading Corps got its start in Wisconsin – we reached nearly 1,500 students over the course of 1.5 million minutes of tutoring.

Just to the south, Racine Unified School District had the second-largest cohort of tutors, who served more than 700 students. The Sheboygan and Janesville districts also reached more students than ever, with Reading Corps members serving at nearly every elementary school in their districts.

Making an Incredible Impact

Wisconsin tutors made a truly extraordinary impact in the 2023-24 school year. Between the newly launched Math Corps and deep-rooted Reading Corps, our tutors worked with over 7,000 students in schools across the state! Altogether, those students received over 10 million minutes of tutoring in just one year! Spending time with a caring adult is a crucial part of ensuring all Wisconsin students get the reading and math skills they need to succeed. We’re grateful to work with partners throughout the state to help them close educational gaps.

“These numbers are a testament to the incredible impact our tutors have on students,” says Galindo. “Every student deserves the chance to succeed. Each one of those 10 million minutes was spent getting them the support and personal attention that makes our tutoring so effective.”

We are so proud of the impact our tutors, partners, and staff continue to have in Wisconsin communities. Want to get involved and learn more about our programs in the state? Visit readingandmath.org/locations/wisconsin
