New Partnership to Expand High-Impact Tutoring to Support Maryland’s Students

We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership with the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation through the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option program! Beginning fall 2026, Reading Corps and Math Corps tutors will be on the ground in Maryland to provide high-impact tutoring support to K-8 students in Cecil, Charles, and Prince George’s counties.

“This partnership allows us to provide critical, high-impact tutoring support to even more students, boosting their foundational reading and math skills as early as kindergarten,” says Lizzie Morris Vogt, senior director of national program administration. “At the same time, we’re proud to support Maryland’s workforce development goals by creating meaningful service opportunities for young adults through the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option. We’re excited to begin the school year alongside new school partners, tutors, and the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation”

As part of the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option Program, 60 tutors will serve with Reading Corps and Math Corps in Maryland elementary and middle schools during the 2026-27 school year. Trained in evidence-based strategies, tutors will spend their days helping students to improve their reading or math skills while also preparing themselves for the next steps in their professional journey.

Boosting Students’ Skills Together

According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, 34% of Maryland’s fourth graders are proficient in reading, and just 25% of eighth graders are proficient in math. Targeted tutoring support from Reading Corps and Math Corps can help students make more than a year’s worth of progress in a single school year.

“Every Maryland student deserves the opportunity to succeed, and every young adult deserves the chance to make a meaningful difference,” says Jonny Dorsey, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation. “Through this partnership, we’re expanding access to proven academic support while creating paid service opportunities that help build the next generation of educators and civic leaders. It’s a win for our students, our schools, and our state.”
