Minnesota Reading Corps combines the people power of AmeriCorps and the science of how children learn to read. Trained AmeriCorps members are placed in early learning centers and elementary schools statewide to serve as literacy tutors for children from age 3 to grade 3. Tutors work with children one-on-one and in small groups daily, providing literacy interventions that are tailored to each learner’s needs.
Minnesota Reading Corps launched in 2003. Since then, the program has expanded to help more than 200,000 children get on track to succeed in reading.
And it works. A rigorous study by NORC at the University of Chicago shows that elementary schools and preschool programs that use Reading Corps achieve significantly greater outcomes for their students than programs that do not have access to the program. Because of its impressive results, Reading Corps is now offered in 12 states and Washington, D.C.
