Experts in High-Impact Tutoring

Our Education Programs - Reading Corps, Math Corps, and Early Learning Corps - are the largest high-impact tutoring programs in the country! We leverage the people power of AmeriCorps to help students achieve grade level proficiency in reading and math.

Fueled by the National Science & Service Collaborative, our programs are backed by evidence. By placing tutors in schools to work with students during the school day, Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps are proven tutoring models that enable students to catch-up when they are months or even years behind.

As a national leader in high-impact tutoring for reading and math, we recruit, train and support more than 3,000 AmeriCorps members who serve as tutors in schools across the country. And we're still growing!

High-Impact Tutoring Frequently Asked Questions

What is high-impact tutoring?

High-impact tutoring is a proven approach that helps students build stronger reading and math skills. High-impact tutoring programs:

  • Train tutors to build strong relationships and use evidence-based strategies
  • Provide tutoring individually or in small groups
  • Meet with students regularly (at least 3 times a week for 10+ weeks)
  • Are part of the school day
  • Have data that shows a significant impact on student achievement

What sets high-impact tutoring apart from other types of tutoring?

When people hear “tutoring” they may think of teenagers or college students helping younger students with homework after school.

High-impact tutoring is different. It’s structured, research-backed, and designed to deliver measurable results. Tutors aren’t providing homework help – they are using evidence-based methods to help students build stronger skills. The data shows that students who receive high-impact tutoring often make an additional 3-15 months of progress during the school year.

What are the characteristics of high-impact tutoring programs?

High-impact tutoring programs like Reading Corps and Math Corps include the following key characteristics:

  • Frequency: Tutors meet with students for 100 minutes per week during the school day.
  • Strong Tutor-Student Relationships: Tutors work with the same students regularly to build trust and support learning.
  • Progress Monitoring: Tutors provide regular assessments to track student progress and adjust lessons to maximize results.
  • Alignment with School Curriculum: High-impact tutoring programs supplement core instruction and align with schools’ multi-tiered systems of support.
  • Trained Tutors: Tutors receive comprehensive training and continuous coaching, ensuring they deliver the highest quality support to foster student success.

How does high-impact tutoring supplement classroom learning?

High-impact tutoring through Reading Corps and Math Corps supplements classroom learning by leveraging the power of consistent, daily support. Students receive about 20 minutes of support from a tutor each day. The time they spend tutoring builds the skills that help them better understand and participate in their everyday curriculum.

The extra people power tutors bring makes it possible for schools to provide students with intensive, individualized support.

How does your high-impact tutoring align with school curriculum?

Reading Corps and Math Corps serve students who need extra support to read and/or do math at grade level. Tutors focus on skills that are the building blocks for proficiency. These foundational skills are important because they enable students to participate and succeed with grade-level content in the classroom.

This not only improves test scores but also helps students be confident, engaged, successful, learners.

Is there anything else I should know about your high-impact tutoring programs?

In addition to supporting students, Reading Corps and Math Corps are building a teacher pipeline. 60 percent of our tutors are interested in becoming educators. Tutoring is a great start for those wishing to go from tutor to teacher and the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award makes earning a degree or teaching credential more affordable!
