The Need in Iowa

Reading and math skills are the building blocks for future success. Linked to higher graduation rates, college enrollment, and lifetime earnings, these foundational skills are essential.

But in Iowa, too many students need a boost getting to grade level. According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, only 29% of fourth graders are proficient in reading, and just 27% of eighth graders are proficient in math.

Reading Corps and Math Corps are helping change that! Tutors provide extra academic support and encouragement to help students strengthen their reading and math skills, building confidence and setting them up for success in school and beyond.

The investigators found extremely large effects on pre-reading skills in Kindergarten and large effects for oral reading growth in first grade.
