Tutor students in California.
Helping California students succeed with high-impact tutoring.
In California, fewer than one-third of students are proficient in reading and math. Together, we can help give kids more — more opportunities, more success and more confidence.
Whether helping preschoolers make a strong start, supporting K-3 students with reading, or working with K-8 students to build foundational math skills, we train everyday people to make an incredible impact as tutors. Placed at local schools, our tutors use proven strategies, providing extra practice and support to help students become stronger learners.
Since launching in 2019, our tutors in California have already helped more than 30,000 local students get on track to succeed! You can be part of creating more success stories in California.

Tutoring Works for California
Our evidence-based tutoring programs are helping students across California make real progress. Through high-impact tutoring and supplemental instruction, we’ve mobilized dedicated tutors, supported thousands of students, and delivered results. Studies show that students in Reading Corps gain the equivalent of an extra half year to nearly a full year of learning, and students in Math Corps were 2-3 months ahead of their expected trajectory. Additionally, students in Early Learning Corps classrooms had significantly higher literacy scores on five separate literacy measures.

The Need in California
Reading and math skills are the building blocks for future success. Linked to higher graduation rates, college enrollment, and lifetime earnings, these foundational skills are essential.
But in California, too many students need a boost getting to grade level. According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, only 29% of fourth graders are proficient in reading, and just 25% of eighth graders are proficient in math.
Reading Corps, Math Corps, and Early Learning Corps are helping change that! Tutors provide extra academic support and encouragement to help students strengthen their reading and math skills, building confidence and setting them up for success in school and beyond.
