The Need in Mississippi
We know that up until third grade, students are learning to read and building essential math skills. After that, they’re reading to learn and using math to solve increasingly complex problems. That’s why a strong foundation in both subjects is so important.
But in Mississippi, too many students are falling behind. According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, only 32% of fourth graders are proficient in reading, and just 22% of eighth graders are proficient in math.
Reading Corps and Math Corps are helping change that! Tutors provide extra academic support and encouragement to help students strengthen their reading and math skills, building confidence and setting them up for success in school and beyond.
