Reading Corps trains everyday people to make an incredible impact as tutors. Placed at local schools, our tutors use proven strategies, providing extra practice and support to help students become better readers.

The Need in Idaho
Up until third grade, students are learning to read. After that, they’re reading to learn and need to be good readers to ensure they understand the material. But in Idaho, fewer than one in three students read at grade level by fourth grade.
That’s why high-impact tutoring is so important: it helps students build strong reading skills so they can succeed in their classroom and community.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 32% of students in Idaho achieve reading proficiency by fourth grade. Learn more about NAEP’s achievement levels and how standards are set.

Reading Corps Works for Idaho
Our evidence-based reading tutoring program is helping students across Idaho make real progress. Through high-impact tutoring and supplemental instruction aligned with Idaho Literacy statutes, we’re supporting thousands of students, and delivering results. Studies show that students in Reading Corps gain the equivalent of an extra half year to nearly a full year of learning!

Jami Whitmer, Executive Director of Idaho
Reading Corps is an evidence-based AmeriCorps tutoring program that helps students build strong reading skills to set them up for success in school and beyond. In Idaho, Executive Director Jami Whitmer is leading the effort to bring high-impact tutoring to thousands of students from kindergarten to third grade.
